Description
I have had requests for a Kephart knife with 4 inch blade for those that wanted something from history. Horace Kephart is considered the God Father of wood craft and I recommend looking him up. He has a mountain named after him. (Mount Kephart in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park). This is my version of a Kephart knife. It is full tang and the spine is flat and hardened to make sparks with a ferro rod. The tip / point is in line with the handle pins. this makes it useful for drilling. The tip is wider than at the base. You can choke up and use this portion for skinning. If you are starting out with wood crafting, I recommend this knife. Kephart knife : If you don’t know about Kephart, I recommend looking him up.
Kephart – Traditional American Woods Knife.
The Kephart is a faithful expression of a classic American woods knife, inspired by the simple, efficient tools carried by early woodsmen, trappers, and explorers. Its design follows the principle that a knife should be useful above all else — nothing added that does not serve a purpose.
This knife is hand-forged in small batches, using time-tested methods that respect the original spirit of the Kephart pattern. It is not a modern reinterpretation, but a return to tradition.
A Knife Meant for the Woods
The straight spine and gentle belly provide excellent control for everyday camp work:
-
Food preparation
-
Feather sticks and kindling
- Spine can be used to spark a ferro rod to create fire
-
Light carving and notching
-
General camp and trail tasks
The narrow profile and neutral balance make the Kephart comfortable to use for long periods without fatigue — as the original design intended.
Honest Materials, Honest Craft
Each Kephart knife is forged, ground, and finished by hand. The blade is heat-treated for dependable edge holding and toughness, producing a knife that sharpens easily and performs reliably in the field.
The handle is shaped in the traditional manner to sit naturally in the hand, offering security without aggressive contours. This allows the knife to work equally well in multiple grips, whether at camp or on the trail.
