It started with a soldier coming home.
Frank Gonzalez came back from war carrying weight that didn’t show on the outside. The smoke, the sand, the silence after the noise. He needed something to hit. Something to shape. Something he could control.
He found an anvil.
What started as therapy became obsession. Every strike of the hammer was a conversation he couldn’t have anywhere else. The rhythm of the forge replaced the rhythm of war. The fire didn’t ask questions.

From a lawn blade to a legacy.
The first knife was ugly. Ground from a lawn mower blade with nothing but a grinder and stubbornness. No forge, no heat treat, no finesse. But it was the spark.
Frank and his brother built their first coal forge out of clay, by hand. Two brothers figuring it out together. The blades got better. Then they got good. Then people started paying for them.
The Frank Bowie, a forward-curved chopper designed from scratch, sold faster than Frank could make them. Word of mouth turned into a waiting list. A hobby turned into a business. KnivesByHand.com was born.

Service
Frank serves in the U.S. military. Encounters the Gurkhas and their legendary kukri blades for the first time.
2000s
The First Strike
Builds a clay coal forge with his brother. Begins hand-forging knives as a way to process what he carried home.
2010s
The Frank Bowie
Demand outpaces supply. Years of selling at shows and through word of mouth force the creation of an official business.

A full product line of hand-forged kukris, bowies, and fixed blades. Partnered with master smiths in Nepal. A Louisiana forge in development for USA-made blades.

Every blade is coal-forged by skilled hands using traditional methods. No CNC. No assembly line. Steel shaped by hammer, fire, and decades of knowledge passed between smiths.
Battle-Tested Design
Our designs come from real use: military service, bushcraft, survival. Blade geometry, spine thickness, and balance aren’t marketing decisions. They’re earned through fieldwork.
Legacy Through Craft
Frank’s body bears the cost of decades at the anvil. Partnering with Nepali master smiths ensures the craft continues: their hands carry the tradition forward while Frank designs every blade.
