I was dissatfied with the selection of Kukri knives that are avaiable on the American market. The items sold on Amazon and Ebay are a mixed bag and most are trash. They are usually too thick or heavy for real use, have terrible heat treatment so the edge is too soft to hold an edge, and have awful sheaths made of inferior leather. The really well made Kukris have to be ordered from reputable Kukri houses in Nepal (there are way more bad ones than reputable ones) and take a long time to ship internationally not to mention that the shipping costs, tariffs, and customs charges cost more than the Knife itself. Then I discovered Knives By Hand and was blown away. This kukri is made with nearly identical style, fit, and finish to the best quality Nepalese Kukris I have in my collection and its made here in the USA, no tariffs, no dealing with DHL, no shady wire transfers to a Nepalese Bank, no shipping charges. You get the same quality (likely much better quality) that you would get from a kukri house in Nepal for a fration of the price, faster shipping, and with better quality steel. It’s a no brainer. So if you see them in stock and you been thinking of getting a kukri, jump on it because when they sell out your only other option it to test your luck with the questionable business practices of overseas imports.
That rant about getting a good quality kukri aside what makes this one great is the beautiful craftsmanship. The rosewood scales are well made, comfrotable , and attractive. The blade is not too thick for practical cutting and has a nice hollow that runs the length of the blade making it lighter but also very attractive especially with its satin polished finish. The convexed edge is perfect done and comes sharp and easy to keep sharp because the edge it properly heat treated. Lastly the Sheath is made of nice supple leather that looks like it will last a long time. most Nepalese sheaths are made of paper thin leather that has a dry brittle feel to it. This is the real deal and Frank’s product could take the Pepsi challenge against a reputable Nepal Kukri house any day of the week.
